Ratha Saptami is one of the most auspicious day observed on the seventh day of Shukla Paksha, or waxing phase of moon, in the Magh Month (January – February) in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Ratha Saptami is dedicated to Lord Surya Bhagawan. In 2016, Ratha Saptami will be performed on February 14.

Ratha Saptami or Magha Saptami is a day which was considered as birth day of God Surya hence celebrated as Surya Jayanti (the Sun-god’s birthday).

This day is Also known as Vidhan Saptami, Arogya Saptami, Surya Jayanti, Achala Saptami, Ratha Saptami is the highly meritorious day to worship Surya Bhagawan.

Rathasapthami begins in households with a purification bath. Taking bath before sunrise during Arunodaya keeps one healthy and free from all types of ailments and diseases. By worshipping Lord Surya on this day one can get rid of all type of sins.

Pray to Surya Dev on Ratha Sapthami day by reciting or listening or chanting Aditya Hridayam, Surya Ashtakam, Surya Shathakam, Aruna Parayanam, Vedam, and performing Surya namaskarams early in the morning. Further, praying to Surya everyday or at least Sunday is highly recommended for good health, wealth and also to take away any obstacles in life. Also, it is highly recommended to avoid eating meat, drinking liquor, and physical involvement with woman on at least Sunday for ones’ welfare.
